  1. This album contains all of McGhee's recordings for Savoy. Some of the tracks stand the test of time and some border on traditional jazz. The latter tracks were probably recorded because Dixieland was still very much in vogue among the mainstream.5/5(2).
  2. Tracks 1 to 14 recorded in Chicago, February Tracks 15 to 27 recorded in Guam late - early 4, 10, 16, 17, 23 previously unissued, all others issued on Savoy
  3. This single CD put out by the Japanese Denon label has 23 of the 27 selections put out a decade earlier on a two-LP set. Worse than the omissions was the decision to duplicate the liner notes and reprint them so small as to be microscopic. The first half of this set is actually quite good, featuring trumpeter Howard McGhee jamming with a talented sextet that co-stars altoist Jimmy Heath and vibraphonist Milt 8/

  6. The first half of this two-LP set is much better than the second half. On the first album the great bop trumpeter Howard McGhee is heard at the peak of his powers in with two different sextets: one with Jimmy Heath (who doubles here on alto and baritone) and vibraphonist Milt Jackson, while the second date features Billy Eckstine, on valve trombone.
  7. A Side & B Side - Recorded in Chicago, February C Side & D Side- Recorded in Guam late - early Italian release of Howard McGhee - Maggie.
